Mesh Screen for Terrarium – Separation and Drainage

The mesh screen , or drainage grid , is a key element in the construction of a bioactive terrarium . It serves to separate the drainage layer (often composed of clay balls or gravel) from the organic substrate to prevent the latter from saturating with water and rotting.

Why use a mesh screen?

Prevents the substrate from mixing with the clay balls , ensuring better filtration.
Improves drainage , preventing the accumulation of excessive moisture that can cause mold or toxic gases (anaerobic).
Promotes a healthy bioactive ecosystem , allowing plant roots to avoid direct contact with stagnant water.
Increases the durability of the terrarium , reducing the need to completely redo the substrate.

Ideal characteristics of a good mesh screen

🔹 Moisture-resistant material : Non-toxic plastic, fiberglass, or stainless steel.
🔹 Fine but breathable mesh : Tight enough to prevent the substrate from falling into the drainage layer while still allowing water to flow through.
🔹 Easy to cut and adapt : Adjusts to different sizes of terrariums.

How to install it?

  • Place a drainage layer (clay balls, gravel).
  • Cut the mesh screen to the size of the terrarium.
  • Place the mesh screen on the drainage layer , fitting tightly to the edges.
  • Add the bioactive substrate on top.

Mesh screen is essential to ensure efficient drainage and a healthy substrate , especially in tropical terrariums where humidity is high.
