The leaves are oval, textured and slightly velvety (or downy) to the touch.
 
 The basic species is distinguished by a rich dark green color tending towards bronze or copper, hence its name cupreata.
 
 Numerous cultivars and hybrids exist, offering spectacular variations, ranging from almost uniform and richly coloured foliage to patterns with highly contrasting silver, pink or pale green veins.
