The Halloween crab (Gecarcinus quadratus) is a colorful terrestrial crustacean native to the tropical forests of Central and South America. It is distinguished by its black shell, bright orange legs, and purplish or red patterns that give it its name.

This semi-terrestrial crab requires a terrarium equipped with a wet area and a dry area as well as a deep substrate for digging galleries. It is mainly nocturnal and spends its days hidden.

Omnivorous, it feeds on fruits, vegetables, dead leaves, insects and animal proteins. It plays an important ecological role as a detritivore helping to recycle organic matter in its environment.
