The Surinamese cockroach ( Blatta surinamensis ) is a species of cockroach native to South America, particularly Suriname. It is often kept in terrariums for reptiles, birds, and other insect-eating animals, but is also sometimes kept as a pet in special terrariums.

This cockroach is easily identifiable by its relatively large size and dark brown to black color, with lighter markings on its wings. Unlike some other cockroach species, the Surinamese cockroach tends to be less aggressive and calmer. It is also very resilient and adapts easily to different environments, making it an excellent choice for breeders of live insects for animal feed.

It is known for its ability to climb vertical surfaces and for its nocturnal behavior. In captivity, it prefers a warm, humid environment, with a substrate that allows it to hide and move freely. Additionally, it is often chosen for its relatively clean behavior and ease of breeding.
