The Caribbean ( Coenobita clypeatus ) and Indonesian ( Coenobita brevimanus , Coenobita perlatus , etc.) terrestrial hermit crabs are terrestrial crustaceans that require a humid tropical environment. They use shells for protection and change them regularly as they grow.
 Caribbean species are hardy and sociable, while those from Indonesia can be larger and more colorful. Their habitat should include a sandy substrate, high humidity, hiding places, unchlorinated fresh and salt water, and a varied diet (fruits, vegetables, proteins). They are gregarious and must be kept in groups for their well-being.
