The Cherry Barb ( Pethia conchonius var. red) is a freshwater fish appreciated in aquariums for its bright color and active behavior.

Features :

  • Origin: South Asia (India, Bangladesh, Nepal).
  • Adult size: Approximately 5 to 6 cm .
  • Life expectancy: 5 to 7 years in captivity.
  • Temperature: 18 to 26°C , ideally around 22-24°C .
  • pH: 6.0 to 7.5 .
  • GH: 5 to 15 .

Behavior and maintenance:

  • Gregarious fish : to be kept in groups of 6 or more individuals .
  • Aquarium: Minimum 80 L for a group.
  • Cohabitation: Compatible with other peaceful fish, avoid long-finned species (like guppies or bettas) as it can pinch them.
  • Diet: Omnivorous, accepts pellets, flakes, bloodworms and vegetables (spinach, zucchini).

Special feature:

  • Males turn a deep red color during breeding, while females remain paler.

It is a hardy fish, perfect for both beginners and experienced aquarists.
